What Does God Say About Music?
When you are
studying music we must study the Bible. What God says is more important than any
outside references. This is because any work written by a man will have that
man’s preference and philosophical bent on that particular subject. He will
write from his own perspective and opinion.
Many history books
have been altered in order to promote an author’s agenda. You could find ten
books that say old hymns were the secular tune of the day and then another ten
books that say they were not. Each book was written to convince the reader
according to the author’s personal belief.
The Bible, however,
will tell you what God says. Man’s emotions, feelings, experiences, and
opinions are invalid and futile in the quest for right music. What matters is
what God says. So what has God said about music and what can we gather from
that? The following are just some simple principles found within Scripture you
can use to study and ask yourself about this topic of music.
I.
The Sound is Different Between Music that Honors
God and Music that does Not. (Exodus 32:17-19; Isaiah 23:15; I Corinthians
14:7-8; I John2:15)
II.
Salvation Produces a Change in Every Area of
One’s Life. (Psalm 149:1; Isaiah 42:10; II Corinthians 5:17)
III.
The Bible Principle of Separation. (II
Corinthians 6:17; Matthew 13:49; 25:32; Luke 6:22; Acts13:2; Romans1:1;
Galatians 1:15; 2:12)
IV.
Satan is a Master of Music and Will Obviously
Attempt to Use this Against God. (Ezekiel 28:13; Isaiah14:12-14)
V.
God’s Holiness Demands the Believer’s Holiness.
(James 3:10; Ezekiel 22:26; 44:23; Leviticus 11:45; 19:2; 20:7, 26; Isaiah 40:
6:1-5; 40:25; Romans 6:11-14; 12:1-2; Titus 7-8, 12)
VI.
God Must be Praised. (Praise and Worship in the
Bible is not the “praise and worship” of today. Same words, but different
meanings.) (Isaiah 24:14; I Corinthians 14:15; Genesis 17:3; II Chronicles
20:18; Ezekiel 1:28; 3:23; 44:4; Nehemiah 8:5)
VII.
God is Not Interested in a More Modern Song.
(Revelation 15:3)
There are scores of
Bible principles we could look at and apply to our lives in this area of music.
When studying the subject of music one has not even begun to do this without first
searching the Scriptures so that they might know the mind of God on this
subject.
May you apply these
principles, and others found within Scripture, to test the form and type of
music that you allow to affect your mind, body, and spirit.
