A Whale of a Lesson
Obedience brings
God’s blessing in our lives while disobedience to the will of God results in
disaster. When God speaks we must see that it is absolutely essential we listen
and obey.
Jonah was taught a
whale of a lesson on this subject. He was told to do something by God, and
willfully rejected that command. Then he sprang into action trying to
accomplish the exact opposite of what God told him to do.
It was a journey of
disobedience that cost him much, and God took him through the school of hard
knocks. Jonah ended up being given a “time out” in the belly of a whale. Once
the whale spit him back up he started on the path to obedience of what God said
(although his heart was still not right where it should have been).
It would have been
much easier and less costly if Jonah had just obeyed from the beginning. Yet we
often find ourselves in the same boat as Jonah. We do not wish to pay the cost
of following Christ, but we willing pay the wage of our sin.
Make no mistake, if
you go in the direction God does not want you to go you will pay a price far
greater than the cost to serve our Lord. Not to mention, nobody wants to go
through a whale of a lesson on obedience like Jonah.
