Confession and Obedience Required
If we wish to
understand the Word of God properly, we must be people of confession and
obedience. The Word is not a book given to us for entertainment purposes. The
Word of God was given so that we might know and do the will of God.
The Bible was not just
given to us for religious knowledge either. It was a book given to us so that
we might be transformed.
Romans 12:2 –
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of
your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect,
will of God.”
So the person who
has no intention to obey God and confess their sin will never understand the
Bible properly.
In I Peter 2:1-2 we
find this truth about God’s Word.
I Peter 2:1-2 –
“Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies,
and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word,
that ye may grow thereby:”
We must first lay
aside sinful things (confession) and then, after that, we can drink in the
Scriptures (obey). If we study the Bible but make no attempt to obey it or lay
aside sin in our lives; we will not benefit from the study of God’s Word at
all.
R. A. Torrey said
the following: “It is remarkable how clear, simple, and beautiful passages that
once puzzled us become when we are brought to that place where we say to God,
‘I surrender my will unconditionally to Yours. I have no will but Yours. Teach
me Your will.’ A surrendered will does more to make the Bible an open book than
a university education. It is simply impossible to get the largest profit out
of your Bible study until you surrender your will to God.”
When you read your
Bible and study it don’t do it as a mere intellectual exercise. Always ask the
Lord to show you how it can be applied to your life and then do it. And never
forget to confess and forsake the sins in your life so that God can have full
access to every fiber of your being.
When this is done
you will find that the Scriptures will come alive and God will show you great
and mighty things.
