God’s Word Delivers From Temptation

When Christ was driven of the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to fast for 40 days, He was tempted by the Devil at the end of this fast. The Devil came to Christ to test Him when He was weak physically. Christ, though weak physically, shows that in the Spirit He was strong and He defeated the Devil, not just because He was God, but because He used the Word of God to defeat him. He did this on purpose to show us the power of God’s Word.

This same weapon is available to all of us today. The Word of God is the sword that Christ used to defeat our foe called Satan.

Ephesians 6:12-17 – “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:”

This account of Christ’s temptation shows us two things. It first shows us that Christ was unable to sin. We serve an impeccable Christ who is unable to sin. The second thing it shows us, however, is the power of the Word of God. We are not impeccable, in other words we can and do sin. Yet we have the powerful tool of the Word of God still available to us today.

Jesus, who was God Himself, used the Word of God without any extra commentary to defeat the Devil. He did this as an example of how we can do the same today.

Human wisdom is not good enough and was not even good enough in the perfectly created man called Adam. Adam and Eve tried to add and improve on God’s Word to defeat the Devil and they failed miserably. The Word of God is all sufficient for any trial we go through all by its-self. The Word of God can and will be an overflowing power to deliver you from every temptation if you but let its words fill your life.
