Talking is not all it’s Cracked up to Be
The Scripture is
very clear that loose lips will always get you into trouble. It is not wise to
spew everything you are thinking about out of your mouth.
Proverbs 17:27-28 –
“He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is
of an excellent spirit. Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is
counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of
understanding.”
True knowledge and
understanding will cause you to close your lips more than open them. Our
opinion does not always need to be shared, and our “wisdom” does not always
need to be given out. Rather we should strive to be quiet more than we talk.
I Thessalonians 4:11
– “And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and
to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;”
That is not to say
we should never talk nor stand up for what is right.
Isaiah 62:6 – “I
have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their
peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence,”
We should also never
forget that words spoken correctly have great power to encourage and uplift.
Proverbs 25:11 –
“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.”
So I am not
encouraging anybody to take a vow of silence; but I am challenging you to
listen more than you speak, think more than you talk, and ponder a thing before
an opinion is given.
