A Word Spoken

Words are very powerful. Once they are spoken there is no changing them. That is why I often say you are master of the unspoken word but the spoken word is master of you.
In our society, however, the value of our words is not realized and is often ignored. Yet, when you speak something you should be a man or a woman of your word. If you are not then nobody can bank anything on you. You may continue to speak but nobody is going to put a lot of weight on your words because they are unreliable at best.
To speak out of control with only emotion and no thought is always a dangerous proposition. It is better to be silent in these situations.
I Thessalonians 4:10-11 – “And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more; And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;”
If people were forced to abide by their word I guarantee we would not let our words fly so quickly, and we would seek a whole lot more counsel before we make decisions.
Your word is your bond, and if you wish to be looked at as a valuable Christian or leader then you better pay attention to what you say. Nobody has the respect that is required of a Christian or a leader if they are a person who is willy nilly with their words and actions.
Now, we all will say something stupid, and we all will eventually give our word on something that will fall through. This is because we are human and we all will fail. Yet we should not view those times when that happens as no big deal. Your word unfulfilled will cause issues and problems with other people and you should be willing to concede you were wrong and do your upmost to fix the problem.
Simply put, if it is at all within your power to keep your word, do it, even if it becomes an inconvenience for you. If you are unable to keep your word and it is out of your power, then be willing to eat crow, and do your part to correct the situation rather than letting others suffer for your inability.
Take charge, be responsible, chose your words carefully, promise nothing you cannot fulfill, and don’t let others suffer for your mistakes. That is how a Christian and leader maintains respect in this world of sin where words will often fail.
I Samuel 3:19 – “And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.”
Oh, to have the testimony of Samuel where our words carry such power that none of them falls to the ground.
